Our Laboratory and Research
The overall purpose of our research is to achieve insight into molecular, cellular and genetic processes responsible for synaptic signal transmission and how these processes can be modulated by drugs. We have main focus on the presynaptic transporters for the biogenic amine transmitters, dopamine, norepinephrine and serotonin. In addition, we have a major interest in ‘scaffolding' proteins that via specific protein-protein interactions and protein-lipid interactions organize neurotransmitter transporters and receptors into desired cellular microdomains and multiprotein signaling complexes.

We can give you the opportunity to use state-of-the art techniques to address fundamental questions in neurobiology and neuropharmacology. We offer a dynamic research environment where competent supervision, scientific excellence and knowledge sharing have highest priority. Possible projects range from structural and dynamic studies of neurotransmitter receptors and transporters as well as their associated scaffolding proteins to integrated studies in genetic mouse models with relevance for CNS-related diseases such as depression, ADHD, Parkinson’s disease, schizophrenia and addiction. Molecular Neuropharmacology and Genetics Laboratory counts ~35 people and is separated into five Groups with focus on 1) cellular biology and genetics of neurotransmitter transporters/receptors (headed by Ulrik Gether), 2) molecular pharmacology and structure of neurotransmitter transporters (headed by Associate Professor Claus J. Løland), 3) cellular ‘scaffolding’ processes in the CNS (headed by Associate Professor Kenneth L. Madsen), structural biology of G protein coupled receptors and transport proteins (headed by Assistant Professor Søren G. F. Rasmussen and 5) neuronal signaling in Drosophila melanogaster (the fruit fly) (headed by Associate Professor Ole Kjærulff).
The laboratory is supported by major grants from the Lundbeck Foundation, the Danish Research Councils, National Institute of Drug Abuse U.S.A., University of Copenhagen, EU and the Novo Nordisk Foundation. The laboratory is part of Lundbeck Foundation Center for Biomembranes in Nanomedicine (Directors Ulrik Gether and Dimitrios Stamou), Center for Synthetic Biology and the UCPH 2016 programs of excellence Attention to dopamine.
